Anti-obesity Effect of Black Ginger Extract (KPE)

Visceral fat (fat around internal organs in abdomen) is a more important factor in obesity-associated disorders in Japanese individuals (and Asian individuals, in general) than in Caucasian individuals. Obesity increases the risk of metabolic disorders, such as insulin resistance (for diebetic patients), hyperlipidaemia, and hypertension (for high blood pressure patients). Obesity is characterised by an excessive lipid (fats) accumulation resulting in body weight gain. Since the global obesity epidemic is rapidly growing, extensive research is being conducted on drugs and functional foods that can prevent obesity. Studies have reported that some natural products can decrease body fat in humans.

Kaempferia parviflora (KP) or commonly known as Black Ginger, contains numerous active constituents, include flavonoids and polymethoxyflavone (PMF). Previous studies have demonstrated that KPE suppresses high-fat diet-induced obesity by increasing energy metabolism, suppresses increase in body weight, reduces body fat accumulation, and alleviates glucose intolerance.

A study conducted in Japan in 2019 has revealed in its finding that, regular intake of KP extract from black ginger reduces visceral fat in Japanese overweight adults, without the need of any lifestyle changes. Intake of purified KP (12 mg) per day was sufficient to achieve this anti-obesity effect. Read more here for the published journal.
