What is black ginger?

Black ginger, the rhizome of Kaempferia parviflora (Zingiberaceae), has traditionally been used as food and a folk medicine for more than 1000 years in Thailand. It is also known as the Thai black ginger, Thai Ginseng,  Black Turmeric, Black Galangal or Krachai Dum (กระชายดำ) in Thailand.

In Thai medicine, black ginger has been used to treat a number of illnesses, including allergies, gout, diabetes, fatigue, erectile dysfunction and dysentery.

Black ginger is widely planted and produced in Thailand, and also in Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, China, Bangladesh and India.

Black ginger extract, also known as Kaempferia Parviflora Extract (KPE), is the extract product, typically in powder form, from the black ginger plant roots, using some patented biotechnology or nanotechnology for extraction in the factory.
